The guitars are 7/8-size nylon string, perfect for kids and as learners for adults. The guitars were purchased from Good-n-Loud Music in Madison. They provided the MAMAs with a generous dicount on the price through Yamaha and even threw in a couple of the cases.

A vigil at Centro Hispano, 810 West Badger Road, Madison, at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 22, will conclude the nine days. The Novenario and vigil are also an expression of support for efforts to close the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia, where the United States Army trains soldiers and police from Latin American and Caribbean countries. The annual School of the Americans Watch vigil is being held November 20-22 at Fort Benning. SOA Watch seeks to close the school, now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, because its graduates have been found responsible for some of the worst human rights atrocities in Latin America and the Caribbean since the school’s founding in 1946. The coup in Honduras earlier this year was headed by graduates of the SOA. The vigil at Centro Hispano will feature prayer, music and witness talks from Latin American natives about conditions in their home countries of Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Peru. The event will also include a social. There will be house meetings at homes throughout the Madison area the first eight days of the Novenario. These gatherings will include prayer, discussion of the situation in Latin America and refreshments. Persons are welcome to attend one or more of these house meetings or to participate in the Novenario by spending a few minutes each day remembering or offering prayers for Latin Americans who have been killed, tortured or abused in some other way. Copies of the Novenario, locations of the house meetings and information about the vigil, are posted on the Centro Hispano website, www.centrodane.wordpress.com. The Novenario and vigil are sponsored by Pax Christi Madison, the local chapter of the international Catholic peace movement. This is the fifth consecutive year a vigil has been held in Madison on the same weekend as the annual School of the Americas Watch vigil at Fort Benning, Georgia. The vigil at Fort Benning has been held annually since 1995 on the weekend closest to the anniversary of the murders by SOA graduates of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter at the University of Central America in San Salvador, El Salvador. This year marks the 20th anniversary of their deaths. In recent years, the vigil at Fort Benning has drawn around 25,000 people. More information on that event is available at www.soaw.org.

Check out this nice video highlighting filmaker Alex Rivera’s visit to Centro Hispano last week. This was such an amazing collaboration between the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at UW-Madison and Centro Hispano as well as many other community organizations. I’m sure this partnership will continue to postively impact the community in the future.
It is with extreme pleasure that Centro Hispano announces Benjamin “Ben” Rodriguez as the recipient of the 2009 Roberto G. Sánchez Award for promoting educational opportunities in the Latino community.
Throughout his life, Mr. Rodriguez has been an essential link between the Latino community and institutions of higher education. His outreach to local high schools and low income neighborhoods has inspired Latino engagement in public service initiatives and built leadership.
Mr. Rodriguez has an impressive list of accomplishments. He created the UW-Student Job Center, helped found the First Wave Spoken Word program, and was not only the Director of the Academic Advancement Program but also the Madison Mentor Program. As cofounder of LAFSA (Latina/o faculty, staff, and graduate students) Mr. Rodriguez has promoted recruitment and retention of many first generation college students.
As an assistant dean at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Mr. Rodriguez has been an integral part of the lives of the students he advises, assisting them with their finances, personal issues, and overcoming racism. His ability to build community is further demonstrated by the admiration of the students he serves. As nominator Assistant Dean Consuelo Springfield states, he has “enabled young people to feel good about themselves and their ability to pursue education.”
Centro Hispano Executive Director Peter Muñoz adds, “Each year Centro recognizes an individual in honor of UW-Madison Prof. Emeritus Roberto Sanchez for his life-long dedication to help students realize a bright future through academic achievement. To this end, we are pleased that Ben Rodriguez has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Award for his work to help students achieve their higher education goals.”
Mr. Rodriguez has always been a leader in initiatives for Latino opportunity in higher education. His continued work for Latinos in education makes Ben Rodriguez a highly deserving recipient of the 2009 Roberto G. Sánchez Recognition Award.
Ben Rodriguez will receive the Roberto G. Sánchez Award at Centro Hispano’s Annual Banquet on November 6th 2009 at the Concourse Hotel.
