Prayer, Vigil Recall Oppression in Latin America

For immediate release Contact: Dennis Collier Pax Christi Madison 608-516-1656 Prayer, Vigil Recall Oppression in Latin America Nine days of prayer, called a Novenario, in memory the victims of violence and oppression in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in the Madison area November 14-22. A vigil at Centro Hispano, 810 West Badger Road, Madison, at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 22, will conclude the nine days. The Novenario and vigil are also an expression of support for efforts to close the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia, where the United States Army trains soldiers and police from Latin American and Caribbean countries. The annual School of the Americans Watch vigil is being held November 20-22 at Fort Benning. SOA Watch seeks to close the school, now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, because its graduates have been found responsible for some of the worst human rights atrocities in Latin America and the Caribbean since the school’s founding in 1946. The coup in Honduras earlier this year was headed by graduates of the SOA. The vigil at Centro Hispano will feature prayer, music and witness talks from Latin American natives about conditions in their home countries of Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Peru. The event will also include a social. There will be house meetings at homes throughout the Madison area the first eight days of the Novenario. These gatherings will include prayer, discussion of the situation in Latin America and refreshments. Persons are welcome to attend one or more of these house meetings or to participate in the Novenario by spending a few minutes each day remembering or offering prayers for Latin Americans who have been killed, tortured or abused in some other way. Copies of the Novenario, locations of the house meetings and information about the vigil, are posted on the Centro Hispano website, http://www.centrodane.wordpress.com. The Novenario and vigil are sponsored by Pax Christi Madison, the local chapter of the international Catholic peace movement. This is the fifth consecutive year a vigil has been held in Madison on the same weekend as the annual School of the Americas Watch vigil at Fort Benning, Georgia. The vigil at Fort Benning has been held annually since 1995 on the weekend closest to the anniversary of the murders by SOA graduates of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter at the University of Central America in San Salvador, El Salvador. This year marks the 20th anniversary of their deaths. In recent years, the vigil at Fort Benning has drawn around 25,000 people. More information on that event is available at http://www.soaw.org.

These kind of events are a wonderful way of helping us to learn what lays at the root of the injustices that generate poverty, violence and mass displacement of people (among other evils) in the developing world. Thank you for welcoming the Vigil to Centro Hispano and encouraging the organizers with your support.
